Out of all the forms of literature you can write or read about-poetry has always been my worst. Why can’t it always rhyme and be as simple as “Roses are red, Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet, and so are you?” Why is it alway so depressing? So when I began my new creative writing class, I was very skeptical about beginning with my worst nightmare for writing. My first assignment was to write just five poems about anything I can think of. Well, being the “smart” student I am, I enlisted in some help of writing these poems with a poem generator. Sure I only had to fill in some blanks here and there, but I was still writing them right? I already had four okay poem finished, each better than the last since I started getting the hang of it. But I was stumped on my final one. I had one generic topic left-friends. Each example I read was about best friends. I started to get choked up, thinking back to a big ongoing fight I have had with my best friend. So, using up all my salty tears and finger strength, this is what I came up with:

She is making music videos with off-tune singing
She is crashing shopping carts in the grocery store
She is a summer stroll on the beach
She is the photographer of our adventures
She is a convertible with the top down
She is a silver bracelet with half-a-heart
She is my partner in crime
She is the sister I never had
She is an irreplaceable person
She used to be my best friend.

Writing this poem made me cry
She truly means that much to me
I sent it her on a whim-
Hoping for something, anything
She called me right away, saying how much she missed me
She cried too, reading this thing
Maybe this poem can be the glue to seal the cracks,
Something that will help us move on from the past
It forever will be changed, you can’t mess with time
But for now, our time can be mine

Family. This one simple word provokes many emotions and images; the white picket fence, the family dinners filled with laughter, and the ever-popular family vacations. But what does family truly mean? Is it honestly the picture-perfect thing we make it out to be? Each and every family is dysfunctional to the outside world. But to us, the family, it works. Simple as that.

Sitting down last night, this topic of conversation was brought up. I asked my parents, if it was weird that their baby girl was going off to college in a few months. Their reply? That is how family works. It goes into different phases. The time has gone by very quickly, but they have been waiting for this day for awhile. For over an hour, we sat on our coach, just telling stories from our childhood. Our favorite Christmases, family vacations, etc.

My family may not be perfect to the outside world, but it is perfectly fine for us.

I used to love Christmas. I loved everything about it; the lights illuminating every house driving down the streets, the decorated tree that added a homey touch to the front windows, but most of all I loved the atmosphere, the feeling Christmas gave me. I never could describe it as a child, but looking back now, I miss it terribly. Once the facade of Santa Clause came to an end, my whole view on the holiday season and it’s meaning slowly began to change. It was a bother to hang the lights, it took too much time to decorate the tree, and the feeling of Christmas was gone.

The only minor tradition I kept for myself was listening to the holiday music on the radio, hoping to catch even a tiny glimpse of that holiday spirit once more. I guess you could say luckily for me, I drove a lot between work, school and my friends’ houses, so my radio was always on, filling my car with the traditional holiday songs that used to get me that pit-of-your-stomach, warm fuzzy feelings. However, one song has forever changed my memories for this holiday, it is the song, “My Grown Up Christmas List”. Having heard the song a number of times throughout the years, I never truly thought too deeply about it before. But after one night of just a long, exhausting day, my drive home in the dark with the radio on once more, this song came on. It was completely dark outside, except for the lights illuminating houses around me, with each housing a brightly decorated tree in the front window. It was at that moment i turned the song on to full blast, and belted the words alongside the radio. This song, although obviously about Christmas, also truly connected with me on growing up, and how, although to old to sit on Santa’s lap, I still can dream.

Do you remember me
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you
With childhood fantasies

Well, I’m all grown up now
And still need help somehow
I’m not a child
But my heart still can dream

So here’s my lifelong wish
My grown up christmas list
Not for myself
But for a world in need

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown up christmas list

As children we believed
The grandest sight to see
Was something lovely
Wrapped beneath our tree

Well heaven only knows
That packages and bows
Can never heal
A hurting human soul

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown up christmas list

What is this illusion called the innocence of youth
Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth
(there’d be)

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end, oh
This is my grown up christmas list

This is my grown up christmas list

I do not want to bore you. To put you to sleep while reading essay, trying to sound politically correct even though bottom line I am asking you for money. I do not want to you think, “well, heard this one before”. Or just to simply restate the question. No. I want to wow you, to grab your attention of its entirety and never let go until you have read the last word. The first sentence is crucial-it can either make or break your thoughts and ideas for the reader.

Whenever I am writing any piece in an English or History class, I try to put myself in the reader’s position. Do I honestly want to be reading this? Why is this so boring? If I write a dull piece, it is just a waste of time for all around. Typically, I am very talented with coming up with catchy hook liners that real the reader in. However, these college scholarships are really starting to get to me. It is frustrating to have writer’s block while having to create something unique to make myself stand out in a sea of students who all are striving for the same thing. I do not know how long this block will last, but it needs to be broken down soon, my future depends on it.

Wherever I go, I leave an impact. I am a leader, the one who brightens up a room as soon as I walk in. I am the person who breaks the ice with a joke or strikes up a conversation with a random stranger sitting in a room. I can never sit still or be bored. I only live life once; why not make the best of it? I never want any regrets. People who walk around upset over all the little things do not realize the big picture. The sun is out, the birds are singing, and it is another beautiful day.

Opportunities can come your way at any time in your day. You will never know what adventure or events are going to happen today, each day to me is a mystery. How do you know if you won’t meet a future business colleague in a class at school? Or maybe a work reference standing in line for coffee? It is so intriguing to me how many connections we have with complete strangers. It could be a favorite baseball team (the Yankees, of course) or an event in the news that invokes a similar emotion.

Why would you not try to live life to the fullest and be involved in anything and everything you can get your hands on? I do not want to be the person who looks back on their life wishing that I took that risk when I had the chance. People say high school and college is the best years of your life. I believe this to be true because there are so many activities to experience and people to experience them with. This is the time in your life to take a crack at that pottery class, to go bungee jumping, or attempt to learn Chinese. These eight or so years in your life remind me of the movie “Yes Man” starring Jim Carrey, who said “yes” to everything that came his way. The power of this one simple word opened his eyes to the fuller picture of the world-that so many things can come your way by just taking that chance to try it.

The impact I will leave on both my school and community is because I did say the word “yes”. I will not just be a number in a classroom, I will be the student who is not afraid to ask questions or be wrong. Prove me wrong, that is something else I can build upon.

We all know and love the catchy song of “Raindrops keep falling on my head”. But if you change raindrops to acorns, that will be the tune for the funeral march of my car’s roof. Thanks to the upcoming fall season of falling leaves, falling temperatures, and of course, falling acorns, I am apologizing to my car’s roof. (since I know the acorns will not). And it is not only my car that is being attacked, but also my house. We get a daily dose of thumps all over my roof, each sounding worse than the first. My head also, is getting in on the fun. Being on a campus for school, changing classes is a war zone with the trees vs students…guess who wins? On the bright side, more acorns equal more snow. But wouldn’t you rather have a snowflake that stay on your nose and eyelashes than a hurtling acorn to the head? I rest my case.

It is hard to imagine that I am a senior in high school. A senior! I have been in school for twelve years, where has that time gone? I can still remember kindergarten, always coloring and running around at recess. First grade, just learning how to write sentences and do math. Then moving on to middle school starting to change classes, being a teenager. Then came high school. Holy cow, high school. The next and best four years of my school career.

Next year I am in college…college. Out on my own. Out of my house, my friends I grew up with, all that I have grown to love. It is amazing how quickly time has passed.

The first day of school felt as if another normal school day, just very bittersweet. This is my last first day of high school. This year will be filled with a lot of lasts. The last spirit week, last homecoming. The last prom, the last friday night home varsity football game jam-packed in the stands.

It has not hit me yet, the fact that I will be gone next year, but I know as soon as I walk across the stage to get my diploma, I know who I am, a senior.

First, an earthquake. Then, a tornado. Finally, a hurricane. Sounds like a hollywood movie right? Wrong! This was the daily activities in the state of Maryland. Yes, Maryland. Not Chicago, or California, or any other cool sate. Just little ol’ Maryland.

I have been Amish for the past week. No electricity to run our technologically enhanced house, no air conditioning to cool off the humid summer air, no lights to even be able to walk around a very dark house, and most of all, no internet to have any connection with the outside world.

This is not a poor me blog. My family was very lucky to have all four of the trees that fell not land on our house or cars (which got very close), however, I feel as if the end is near. How can this many natural disasters happen in one week? Did we just tick off the wrong person, or are the Mayans actually correct about the end of the world? This is only 2011, I can only imagine what is in store for the final year of the world.

Just by looking at the title, you can assume what this blog will be about-an earthquake in Maryland. But come on now, Maryland? Really? You always hear some events like this in the news happening somewhere, well, “happening”, but not here, not in Maryland. The major question on Facebook, twitter, etc was “Where were you when it happened?” My answer would be in my mom’s seemingly strong office. However, after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, I felt as if I were in a huge plate of jello. The room was shaking, books falling, pictures shifting-my whole world was moving around me as I sat perfectly still glueing myself to my chair I was sitting in.

Never before had I been in an earthquake before, no movie or class can teach you how it feels to be part of one. It is one of those experiences that you can only imagine if it happened to yourself. Not only was my personal history made, but also for the East Coast. A strong earthquake like this has not hit the coast since the year 1977! I’m sorry, but that is pretty impressive to me, a person who can finally add to her list of accomplishments-I survived the earthquake of 2011.

In anything you do in life, whether it be school, a sport, or in this case a job, there is always that first. That first step that springboards you into the rest fo your life. You never forget your firsts-first grade when you actually had to read and write, your first game in a sport you tried to pick up, or a first job to get you that extra money in your pocket. For me, my first “official” tax-stripping job is at Chick Fil A. Usual for a teenager to work fast food as a first job, I assumed it would just be a get in get out affair. Well, I am here to tell you that I will no longer look at restaurants or fast food places for that matter the same again. You do not realize the work the cashier has to do typing in your order into the sensitive touch screen register that loves to not cooperate with the customer’s order. Or that when someone fills your drink there is a fine line that you have to stop at or your hands will be washed in soda. Or that an ice cream cone has to be made in swirls quickly or else you will end up slipping on your own freshly made cone that presumably has dropped off the cone onto the floor.

I do not mean to complain…..oh what the heck I am! People are extremely messy when it comes to eating food. I mean, how is it possible to get ranch sauce on both the top and bottom of the tray? Or just stand up from a table leaving uneaten food? Or a mountain of crumbs?

Personally, my mother always taught me to clean up after myself, I guess others did not get that memo? Oh well, a job is a job, and I have to start somewhere.
